Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is the upcoming sequel to Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, turning the Zelda-esque cozy RPG into a top-down twin stick shooter inspired by games like Nuclear Throne and Enter the Gungeon. By teaming up with the Pickled Gang, Turnip Boy finds himself in Stinky's Botanical Bank, shaking down pedestrians for their money, shooting security guards, and breaking through vaults to gather as much money as he can! After a hefty heist, you can go back to you base to buy meta progression items off the dark web, letting you progress a little further into the bank each time!
I was asked to join the project shortly after finishing my mod of Turnip Boy in Rivals of Aether, and got on-boarded for the project around May 2022. From there, my task has been making the majority of in-game art assets across every aspect of the game, including character animations, portraits, weapons, visual effects, environment art, props, and UI. I even hopped on art for some of the promotional material, including trailer scenes and memes on social media!
Around halfway through development, we realized that getting all of the art for the game done before going gold was going to put us into crunch, so we hired another artist, Pearl, to effectively double the speed at which we finished art for the game. For the first couple months she was onboard, aiding Pearl in nailing down the established art style/techniques used for the game became part of my job, and the end results were spectacular! She did a lot of the work on the Crypt zone and final boss design, which both turned out phenomenal.
Below are some assets I made for the game!
